Acoustic Images of HeLa cells division.

Acoustic Image (black/white) and corresponding fluorescence image of a human adult stem cell.

High resolution ultrasound

High frequency acoustic microscopy is used to access local mechanical properties of small samples with optical resolution. The technique does not induce damage due to the low phonon energy and can be used to image the interior of opaque samples.

High speed imaging and low costs of this technique add to the uniqueness of the method.

While conventional acoustic microscopy is used for investigation of hard materials, the SASAM microscope series was especially designed for quantitative analysis of mechanical properties and morphology with life sciences applications in mind such as:

  • cell mechanics, basic cell research
  • stem cells
  • bone, bone implants
  • small animal
  • biopsies, tumor diagnosis ex vivo
  • ophthalmology, skin imaging, tumor diagnosis in vivo
